May 15, 2012 - The laser is used to help the telescope to fix the distortion caused by the atmosphere. Check this video, it explains that. /de75W5-b2iQ

May 5, 2012 - televisions should broadcast these things so the world can undestand that we are beyond ourselfs we live in something bigger

jptownse Says:

May 4, 2012 - The lasers are used to estimate the amount of distortion caused by the atmosphere. By looking at what happens to the laser light the telescope operators can make on-the-fly minute adjustments to the telescope mirror which correct for the atmospheric distortion. The result is a better picture, which allows astronomers to see fine details they otherwise would not be able to see.

Apr 30, 2012 - I care about misleading video titles. YouTube also cares... it's against their rules.

UPANDCOMINGGSI Says:

Apr 29, 2012 - who cares man? its cool as fuck!

bryceguy72 Says:

Apr 29, 2012 - The title of this video is misleading. It makes it sound like the images we're seeing were taken THROUGH the telescope. No, these images are the exact opposite... they were taken through a wide-angle lens (a fish-eye lens). The time-lapse camera that took these images was probably positioned somewhere near the actual telescope, because there's minimal light pollution and atmospheric distortion near large, expensive ground-based telescopes.

Creaform003 Says:

Apr 29, 2012 - You know heat haze off the road? Well if you shine a laser through it you can see where the line bends, and then really quickly move your camera, if you do this fast enough you get a clear image. Same thing only instead of heat haze its moving air.
