They preserved all 363 miles of Oregon's coastal beaches from development and allowed the public "free and uninterrupted use of the beaches". We started our tour on the southern coast where powered vehicles are allowed on selected sand dunes. ]]> Oregon Coast Ride Just completed a trip to Oregon coast from Twin Falls, Idaho (1620 miles all together) on Burgman 400. 16085 miles total. Add ons include Give windscreen, hand gaurds, side leg shields and Bestem top box. There are many great rides in the rain forests of Oregon. this ride was on old hwy 101 between Netarts and Lookout Point. Road maintenance was rough but all in all a wonderful ride!

]]> Pacific Northwest Oregon Coast In HD With The Canon XH A1 The beautiful Oregon coastline. I captured these beautiful Pacific Ocean shots driving the coast of Oregon. These are clips from my 2008 trip to Portland. The camera I used is the Canon XH A1. At the time, I had not owned the camera very long and didn't even know how to properly use all of the functions. I turned it to automatic and just started shooting. The editing was done in Final Cut Pro X. This is Apple's newest version of Final Cut. Shooting in the automatic mode will usually not give you the vivid colors you are actually shooting. The only color grading I used in this video was "hard light" video generator. The hard light generator, which is built in to FCPX, makes the colors pop more on the screen. I adjusted the hard light setting to 75, which is 3/4 of the setting. The colors you see, more closely resemble how it actually looked. One some of the shots, I slowed the speed down 50% to have a better visual appeal to the waves crashing. At the end of the video with the sun blazing and just about to go down over the horizon, a sea gull flew perfectly past and I couldn't believe the shot. In my original video you can hear me telling my wife that I just captured a perfect shot of a bird in front of the sun which was pure luck. Music by Generalfuzz.net

At first I thought it was police or ambulance sirens and that there must have been an accident nearby. It kept on for so long I began to realize there was some other emergency. I called my neighbor and he said "Turn on your TV, there's been a huge earthquake in Japan and we are having a tsunami alert." I live about a mile and a half from the ocean and he said when he called the police they said that we did not need to evacuate. But I was visualizing tsunamis I'd see on TV so I got my 2 dogs and left in the car. I headed into Florence, where I saw a line more than a block long for the pumps at what might be the only gas station open at that time of night. I drove out 126 to Mapleton, realizing I might need to get away from the river because it would be effected too. Beyond Mapleton I pulled into the Gingerbred Man Restaurant and listened to the news on the car radio. First they were talking about people in Hawaii in hotels who were going up to the 8th floor for safety, and they weren't sure how severe the tsunami would be. The restaurant, surrounded by wilderness next to the Siuslaw River, turned on it's lights and someone waved a coffeepot out the front door. Many of us went in to get some coffee. ]]> Oregon Coast Death Risk? Not a glamorous way to die... Along the beautiful US 101 highway on the Oregon Coast, there are numerous places where a car, truck or bus can pull off the road to rest or to view the spectacular scenery, but many of these pullover areas have no guardrails! This video shows one such place, between Lincoln City and Newport, where a VW is parked just a few feet from a dangerous dropoff. Whether a car goes over or a person simply stumbles and falls, the end result would be death. And not a dignified death, either. Let's imagine: 1) A schoolbus, on the way back home after a high school football away game. late at night, pea soup fog and raining as is quite common along this coast. The bus driver pulls off the road, doesn't see the 5" high curb, and over the bus goes. 2) Ditto situation. Bus stops safely, the kids start piling out in the dark, maybe a little horseplay after the big game, and over a couple of them go. 3) Same dark, rainy, foggy night. A car pulls over, passenger steps out and disappears. And this is low tide. If a lost person or vehicle isn't found quickly, what will the sea do to them? Geez! Oregon has a 'Death with Dignity' law which permits physician-assisted suicide for certain terminally ill patients. At the opposite end of the end-of-life spectrum is Oregon's 'privilege' of dying in the manner depicted here. There's nothing dignified about accidentally driving your car over an unguarded embankment.

Lars, his wife Kass and sons, Pelle and Leif, all love to surf, windsurf, sail and ski, usually together as a family. As a fifth generation carpenter, Lars is a true craftsman and shapes his sustainable surfboards out of wood that comes from the acres of forest land he owns that overlooks the Pacific Ocean at Cannon Beach. Each of Lars' handmade boards are etched with his company name, 42 Surfboards, in sustainably harvested abalone. He also has a PhD in Environmental Science and a Masters in Hazardous Waste Management. Lars and 42 Surfboards have been involved with many charities connected to surfing and marine environment, including 1% For The Planet, Surfrider Foundation, Sea Shepherd, and SurfAid. In the winter months, Lars and family travel to the shores of Hawaii, California and other wave-crashing coastlines where they surf and enjoy the water. Aaron Baker searches for lost World War II fox holes that where built to protect the coast line from Japanese attack. The fox holes were a common play area for his family in the 50s and 60s. The fox holes are located near Bob Creek, between Florence and Yachats, Oregon. Aaron's search was a failure, but he will not let up and will continue the search in future time. ]]> Tsunami causes West Coast Damage, Brookings Oregon 3/11/2011 On March 3 2011 a powerful earthquake struck the coast off of Japan. At approximatley 8:31 am almost 7 hours later those large ocean waves traveled across the pacific ocean striking the west coast of Oregon and California. Brookings Oregon coast sustained severe damage to its port causing fishing vessels,pleasure boats and sailboats to break free of their moorings. The smell of deisel was punget in the air as we were able to travel down to the port of Brookings. Docks were torn apart along with numerous half and fully sunk boats in the harbor. Numerous rescue personnel were on hand to help the victims of the tsunami. One man lost his life during the catastrophe. At around 2:38 you'll see a small tsunami surge come into the harbor, and around 6:05 you'll see the docks start dropping as the water recedes out of the harbor. Crescent City also sustained major port damage from the tsunami and was declared a state of emergency.
